Intervista ad Helena Willis, illustratrice della famosa serie Lasse and Maja, conosciuti in Italia con il nome di Max e Lara, investigatori privati

Da quanto tempo disegni? Cosa significa il disegno per te?

Disegno da una vita. Ma sono una illustratrice freelance dal 1991, quando ho lasciato l’istituto d’arte.

Amo disegnare e questo è il miglior lavoro che io possa immaginare.

Non mi piacerebbe fare altro… forse scrivere un po’ di più.

Tu sei un’illustratrice molto conosciuta per la famosa serie dei piccoli investigatori Lasse e Maja, quando  penso a loro, io vedo le tue illustrazioni nella mia mente: che sensazione  è dare un volto hai personaggi, sapendo quanto questo possa dare la giusta cornice al racconto?

Domanda difficile. I non metto mai le parole a questo processo. Ma provo a sentire il testo e fare le immagini che sento nello stesso modo. E aggiungo qualcosa di mio anche.

Cosa consigli ai giovani che vogliono intraprendere questo mestiere?

Bene, dico loro di disegnare e disegnare e disegnare… La maggior parte del lavoro si può imparare da soli. Ma è anche divertente e utile andare a scuola d'arte, naturalmente. Amavo quello. Forse soprattutto perché incontravo la gente con lo stesso interesse come il mio.

 Cosa ti ispira quando disegni, immagini i personaggi dalle descrizioni e  cosa succede quando tu interagisci con lo scrittore?

Ottengo il testo dall’autore e lo leggo più volte, così il testo mi ispira di più.

Ma anche cerco su Google tantissime immagini per l’ambientazione del racconto. Ho appena finito il nuovo libro di Lasse e Maja, intitolato: “Il Mistero in Ospedale”. Ho cercato tra tante vecchie immagini di ospedali e infermieri. Adoro questo. Ma io non ho interagito con lo scrittore durante la realizzazione di tutta una serie come Lasse e Maja.

Noi non lo facevamo fin dall’inizio. Noi siamo grandi amici, Martin Widmark ed io, ci incontriamo spesso ma raramente parliamo di lavoro.

L’ambito creativo è molto delicato quando tu interagisci con chi ti chiede un lavoro, proprio per adattare il tuo stile alle richieste, vero? Così chi fa questo lavoro è una persona molto sensibile, come concili il tuo essere sensibile con il mondo degli affari, qualche volta, molto duri da affrontare?

Io ho pochi amici in questo settore ai quali posso chiedere quando non so cosa fare con un’immagine o giusto per sapere cosa pensano. Quello è un grande aiuto. Il più delle volte lo so da me. E il mondo degli affari cerco di dimenticarlo quando lavoro. Io devo ricordare sempre chi sono in tutto questo. Ma ho tante scadenze! E quelle sono importanti da seguire.

1) For how long have you been drawing? What does drawing mean to you?

I´ve been drawing for all my life. But a have been a freelance illustrator since 1991 when I left Art School. I love drawing and it is the best work I can think of. I would not like to do anything else ... well maybe write a bit more.

2)You are a very known illustrator of the famous Lasse and Maja's books series,  when I think about Lasse and Maja, I see your illustrations in my mind: what sensation is to give a face to the characters, knowing how this give a right frame to the tale?

Hard question. I never put words to the process. But I try to feel the text and make pictures that feel the same ... and I add some of myselt also.
3) What do you suggest to the young people when they want to do this job?

Well, I tell them to draw and draw and draw. Most of the work you can learn yourself. But it is also fun and helpful to go to Art School of course, I loved that. Maybe most of all because I met people with exactly the same interests like me.

4) What does it inspire you when you draw, do you imagine the characters from the descriptions in the tale and how does it work when you interact with the writer?

I get the text from the author and I read it several times, and the text inspires me the most. But I also Google a lot for pictures for the environment in the book. I just finished the new LasseMaja-book and it is called The Hospital-mystery. I searched a lot on internet for old pictures from hospitals and nurses and so on. I love that.

But I don’t interact with the author at all in the middle of a book series like Lasse and Maja. We did that a lot in the beginning. Now we are great friends Martin Widmark and I - and we often meet - but we seldom talk about the work.
5)The creativity field is very delicate when you interact with who ask your work, just to adapt your style to his/her request, true? So who does this job is a very sensitive person, how do you conciliate your sensitive being with the business world, sometime, very hard to face?

I have a few friends in my field that I can ask when I don’t know what to do with a picture or just want to check what they think. That´s is a big help. Most of the times I know this myself though. 

And the business world I really try to forget when I work. I must remember who I am myself in all this. But I have a lot of deadlines! And those are important to follow.
